Earth’s polar regions are where climate change is having some of the most visible and significant impacts. Many species are finding it hard to adapt to the escalating changes. The ocean water surrounding the Antarctic peninsula has warmed 2.5 degrees Celsius (4.5 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1950. That's about five times the rate of warming measured for the rest of the world.
Out of all the Antarctic bird and mammal species, the emperor penguin has become the most vulnerable to the rapidly changing climate. It needs stable, sea ice on which to breed as it is too clumsy to climb over icy, slopes. But it also needs ice-free ocean areas in which to feed.
The male emperor penguin is the only warm-blooded animal that remains on the Antarctic continent through the winter. It stays to brood the single egg laid by its mate. The female spends nine weeks at sea and returns in time for the egg to hatch.
Emperor penguins are just one of many species being impacted by climate change. With this gift, you will support WWF's work to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature – and make someone’s holiday special with a unique and interesting gift!
